When The British Library decided to restructure its HR and payroll system for its 2,500 employees, it wanted a holistic technology solution that would enable HR and payroll to talk to each other as well as offering extra functionality such as training, recruitment and employee self-service access.

Background
It was important to The British Library that the company it chose to work with to restructure its HR and payroll system acted as a partner not just a supplier. With this in mind NorthgateArinso was chosen against severe competition from a variety of other bidders, largely due to its extensive experience in the HR and public sector marketplaces. In the first stage of a seven-year contract with The British Library, NorthgateArinso has implemented an integrated HR and payroll solution, which includes a single database solution for both HR and payroll, thus ensuring there is no inconsistency, duplication or re keying of information between user departments.
Solution
As well as implementing ResourceLink, NorthgateArinso is also supplying a managed payroll service and ASP service for the library. NorthgateArinso’s ASP service manages the hardware and associated services in support of the ResourceLink application. The managed payroll service supports the British Library payroll team with the day-today practicalities of running a payroll. On completion of the monthly pay cycle, NorthgateArinso manage the payroll processing, payslip production, BACS payments and third party payments. At the end of the tax year, NorthgateArinso manage all the ‘end of year’ processes on behalf of The British Library.

Conclusion
Looking to the future, NorthgateArinso will continue working with The British Library to implement more functions to the HR and Payroll solution. NorthgateArinso is currently working on applying training and recruitment models, and once these are live, it plans to look at providing self-service features so that employees can manage access to their own details. This will enable them to do things such as book training courses and holiday time, reducing much of the administration for HR staff and allowing them to concentrate on more strategic issues.
